English as a foreign language
You are totally immersed in English from the moment you enter the classroom. Our tutors then use a variety of methods to engage and encourage you, adapting them to suit your learning needs. A typical class might involve role play or group work and include several tasks designed to reinforce and practice the spoken and written language in an interesting way. Most of our classes are theme-based, meaning that we plan the lesson around a topic such as, for example, 'Education' or 'Leisure' or 'Travel'. The students also explore the English way of life, its institutions, literature and history, where appropriate. Homework and self-study are expected and there are facilities in the College for this purpose including a collection of graded readers and other books and audio materials to help you in our Student Study Room.
The Courses and Examinations
On arrival at the College students are given a test to assess their level of English. This is a written and oral examination. Then they are placed in an appropriate class: Beginners, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate or an exam class. The exam classes prepare students for the University of Cambridge English exams - IELTS, First Certificate, Advanced (CAE) and Proficiency (CPE). Students must pass a small test to check they are ready to progress to the next level. Students then have regular tutorials with the Director of Studies to discuss their progress individually. Tutors also monitor students' progress through regular tests and may make suggestions for further study or advise that the student should change level. We try to help students progress as quickly as possible.
These exams are widely recognised around the world. Please check with the College beforehand on the availability of any courses listed here.
