Profile of the Staff

All our English teachers speak English to native level and are qualified teachers of English as a Foreign Language. Our Director of Studies holds the Diploma in English Language Teaching and the Principal has a masters degree in English from the University of Oxford. Purley English Language College is accredited by the British Council and is a member of English UK.

Jan Fossgard - Principal/DOS
Jan, who as well as being a teacher is also our Principal, has two English degrees from Oxford University and is certified to teach English. He is fluent in many languages and has taught French, German and Spanish at the college here as well as English. Students love his mild manner, helpfulness and real enthusiasm to assist them in their studies.

Susan McCallum - Accommodation and welfare officer

Nova Fossgard - Administration/Finance Manager
Nova is the marketing director and is a graduate of BScommerce - Accounting from the Philippines and part qualified in ACCA in England. She has been attending several courses in Marketing and recently became a member of CIM (The Chartered Institute of Marketing). Nova is noted for her bubbly personality, her cooking skills and a laugh that can be heard in every corner of the College. She has also travelled widely.

Setsuko Yoshimura - Marketing Assistant
Setsuko is an economics graduate from Japan. She settled in the UK in 2006 and initially joined Purley Language College as a student before becoming one of its staff members.
Setsuko acts as a liaison between the College and several Japanese agencies, as well as addressing the needs of the students at the College and performing other administrative duties.
She holds a Lifelong learning professional certificate as a project manager and is also a licensed calligraphy instructor.
Setsuko enjoys travelling, eating and cooking international food. If they are lucky, students at the college may even get a chance to try her homemade sushi!

Anita Clancey - Teacher
Anita started her career in TEFL teaching in 1982 while living in Madrid Spain. She worked for four years in ADP an English school mainly teaching Business English in large multi national companies to management levels. On returning to the UK she worked for fourteen years at Sussex Central College in Crawley, responsible for the FCE exam courses for four years, and then covered all levels of ESOL. She moved to the Croydon area in 2002 where she worked for a year in The London Academy and taught all levels of EFL. In 2004 she joined Purley Language College and taught FCE, CAE and covered IELTS and other levels of English. She has two grown up daughters and one grand daughter. Her hobbies include dancing, (all types) reading and travelling and she is a fluent Spanish speaker.

Michael Tomsky - Teacher
Michael is our specialist for high levels and exam classes such as IELTS. He studied History, Politics and Philisophy at The University of Exeter and is certified to teach English through Trinity College London. Michael has travelled all over the world, and has now settled back in London. Students love his commitment to the course and his real passion for communicating a love of language

Emma Dempsey - Teacher
Emma is our specialist for low levels. She has two degrees from the University of London, is certified by Cambridge University to teach English, and is an expert on Asian languages. She is loved by students for her caring nature and also the great variety she introduces into her lessons.

Mala Ramsurrun - Spanish/French teacher for children

Rita Vigar - Italian teacher for children

David May - Transport
David May is available for airport and station collection for individuals and small groups. Along with his wife, they are one of our host families.
